Lata Mangeshkar, one of India's biggest cultural icons and a singer who defined music and melody for generations of her countrymen, died on Sunday.

She was 92 when she passed away. She was hospitalized on January 08 after being infected with Covid-19.

Over the next few weeks, Lata Mangeshkar showed signs of improvement. However, on Saturday, hospital authorities said that Lata had been put back on the ventilator after her health deteriorated. Breach Candy Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment, said she died of multiple organ failure on Sunday morning.

Lata Mangeshkar, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, was an icon of Indian cinema, having sung playback for an extensive list of Hindi films; she also sang in several regional languages including Marathi and Bengali.

On the passing of India's legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu joined the nation in sending their condolences on Sunday.

India has also declared two days of national mourning with public broadcaster Doordarshan announcing that Mangeshkar will be given a state funeral and that the country’s flag will fly at half-staff.

Her last rites will be held at 6:30 pm (13:00GMT) on Sunday.

Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first Hindi song called “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi feature Gajaabhaau, which had released in 1943. In a career spanning over seven decades, Lata sang more than 30,000 songs in 36 languages.

Lata’s popularity extended far beyond India. She was celebrated not only in neighboring Pakistan and Bangladesh but also in some Western countries.

She was awarded the “Bharat Ratna”, India’s highest civilian honor in 2001. The government of France conferred on her its highest civilian award, “Officier de la Legion d’Honneur”, in 2007.
