The government of India has donated Anti – Tuberculosis (TB) drugs to the Maldives.

In a special ceremony, the Anti – Tuberculosis (TB) drugs were handed over by Mr. Rohit Rathish, Chargé d'affaires, High Commission of India. On behalf of the government and the people of the Maldives, Minister of State, Ministry of Health, Government of Maldives Shah Abdulla Mahir received the donations.

The donation included over 27000 tablets of various Anti-TB drugs including against Multi-Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

The Anti-TB drugs have been gifted from the stock of India's National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) under India's Neighbourhood First policy. India is committed to supporting the Government of the Maldives' initiatives in the health sector. Hence the gift of Anti-TB drugs shall add to the efforts of the Govt of Maldives to eradicate TB in the country before 2025.

Tuberculosis (TB) is the world's top infectious killer despite being a preventable and curable disease. The region is home to a quarter of the world's population and bears 43% of the global TB burden and one-third of the global burden of drug-resistant TB.

India’s Neighborhood First foreign policy prioritizes cooperation between India and Maldives in the health sector. During the visit of the Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar to Addu in March this year, the Vilunu Drug Detox and Rehabilitation center was inaugurated. Both countries also partnered to prevent an outbreak of measles in January 2020.
