Member of Parliament for the Maradhoo constituency, Ibrahim Shareef, has stated that today is a dark day in the history of the parliament, and yesterday was even worse. Shareef stated this regarding what certain members of parliament had said about the Chagos case.

While debating on the amendment proposed for the Evidence Bill, Shareef said that very concerning things have happened in the parliament yesterday. He added that speaking in ways that disturb the peace of the nation is a tragic thing.

“While some members say Chagos is ours when an army went to get Chagos, none of these people cared. There are other places like this too, other places for which we can make the same claims. But the way things are right now in the world, these aren’t endeavors we can succeed in,” said Shareef.

Shareef stated that the borders of nations are still the same ones from before the law of the sea was passed and that the borders haven’t been updated because of the current condition of the world and the conflicts that could rise with border disputes.

Shareef further stated that saying whatever comes to mind in the parliament without inhibition, in the name of expressing variety in opinions, can be dangerous to the safety of the country and ruin the future of the people. He called on for the members to steer clear of such things.
