To aid working parents, government offices and the offices of state corporations have initiated establishing daycare centers. Establishing daycares to solve the issues in childcare faced by working parents has been part of the government’s Strategic Action Plan.

Member of Parliament for the Hinnavaru constituency, Jeehan Mahmood had asked Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi, in writing, about the progress of this plan. In response to the MP’s question, the Minister said that work is underway to establish an affordable daycare center and that the biggest project was to establish one in Malé with free aid from ADB. However, she added that the government has not yet succeeded in finding a location for the center.

The Minister also stated that establishing daycare centers in government offices and the offices of state corporations have been initiated. If this work is continuing successfully and STELCO and MPL will have daycare centers before the end of this year, and as of now, work is being done to import all the essentials for the STELCO daycare, Minister added.

In addition to STELCO and MPL, HDC is building a 3000 square feet, 6-story daycare center in Hulhumalé. It is being developed with state-of-the-art utilities including accessibility for the disabled.

The government has now even established rules and regulations for the establishment of daycares.
