Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof has claimed that few people would believe lies told with political agendas. He said this in a tweet made in response to the Chagos controversy.

Mahloof said that president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s answer to the inflammatory spiel circulating about Chagos and the Maldivian government last night made the truth abundantly clear. He added that this government will not give up even an inch of its territory.

Speaking at the ceremony held to celebrate the day the Maldives embraced Islam, the President declared last night that the government has not taken any action that would affect its autonomy.

“Neither in the Chagos issue nor in any other external affair has this government taken any action that negatively affects the autonomy of this nation. And this government will not let that happen in the future either,” the President stated.

President Solih added that in 1992 the government of Maldives held discussions with the UK along with Mauritius to solve this issue. It was agreed upon to divide the conflict zone between the two nations equally.

Furthermore, the President stated that in 2011, the government held discussions again with Mauritius. And it was agreed to have more talks to solve the conflicting issues.

The President stated that in this issue with Mauritius, the government will put the Maldives first. He added that even though this is the case, there are those who, while knowing the truth, spread seditious rumors for selfish political agendas.
