Addu city mayor Ali Nizar has stated that taxes are an important source of income for the development of atolls.

Speaking in the debate regarding the amendment proposed by the government on raising tax rates, Nizar said that taxes are taken for the people and those who benefit from it would be the people.

While 80% of the economy is based in the Greater Malé area, taxes are an important source of money to be used in the further development of atolls, the mayor claimed.

“The promises made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the atolls can be fulfilled by raising the taxes,” mayor Nazir said.

The amendment to the tax bill proposed by the state’s finance department to the parliament proposes raising GST from 6% to 8% and TGST from 12% to 16%.

In the recent Maldives Public Expenditure Review (PER) report, the World Bank praised this decision of the government.
