The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives team has praised the government’s proposal to raise GST and TGST rates.
In the team’s press release, they stated that the government’s proposed amendment is necessary to increase state revenue, improve the economy, raise wages and provide basic necessities. It was further stated that progressively raising the TGST taken from tourists and the Business Profit Tax (BPT), plus income tax would be good for the nation’s economy and help narrow the divide between the rich and the poor.
The team stated in the press release that it is important for the state to get the tax money that has not been paid by various parties plus the land rent owed to the state.
The government has proposed to the parliament to raise GST from 6% to 8% and TGST from 12% to 16%.
