Former President and current Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has asked not to sacrifice the environment to develop infrastructure.

Nasheed stated this while speaking at the book launching event held in Kuramathi resort for “Kuramathi – Quick Guide to Plants in the Maldives” by Dr. Shafia Aminath and Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa.

Nasheed claimed that it’s a fact that the environment is sacrificed to develop infrastructure projects like making roads, harbors, and seawalls. Nevertheless, Nasheed has called for these projects to be done in an environmentally friendly manner.

“The trees on the seashore, breakwaters, seawalls, and reefs all do the same thing. That is protecting the island,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed stated that in all islands, protecting the island in an environmentally friendly way is something that can be done without much expenditure. Building a 1-meter reef costs only 25 dollars while spending on trees on the seashore will not cost even 5 dollars, added Nasheed.
