Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef has stated that Previous Presidents and Attorney Generals should face criminal charges for not trying to get Chagos.

Speaking at the Parliament regarding the disagreements on the division of the conflicting sea area between the Maldives and the Chagos islands, Shareef said that there are ex-Presidents and ex-Attorney Generals claiming that Chagos belongs to the Maldives, yet they had done nothing to get it.

Shareef stated that since these people who claim that Chagos is part of Maldives never went to any international court to get what rightfully belongs to the nation, they should face criminal charges.

“When Mauritius, to claim Chagos, went to courts around the world, to United Nations' commissions, to boundary tribunals, and succeeding, went to European courts and had UK and United Nation’s International Court pass judgment in their favor, these people (ex-presidents and ex-attorney generals) did nothing. They have to be criminally charged for not doing anything while being in powerful positions with great responsibilities,” Shareef said.

Furthermore, Shareef said that this issue was not blown out of proportion because President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih gave up any inch of Maldives’ territory but rather, the opposition is making false claims because the government is working on getting territory that belongs to the country.

Shareef stated that the government has not given up even an inch of the nation’s territory. And that no ex-Presidents or ex-Attorney Generals tried to claim any territory the way Mauritius did in the UK. If they had done so, there would have been documents in tribunals and international courts.

“In this issue, lying to the Maldivian people, betraying them and spreading discord among them, and acting in ways that ruin the good name of the Maldives internationally and ruin international relationships is dangerous. Whether we believe it or not, based on the decision of the United Nations, Mauritius will be a neighboring country,” Shareef said.

Meanwhile, the deputy minister of the Transport Ministry, Saudulla Ahmed has stated that the Chagos issue is a political card being played by the opposition because they are despairing as they know they will lose the 2023 election. In addition to this, Saud had said that in President Solih’s presidency, Maldives has become a respected friend in the international community loved by all nations.
