President's Office Minister Ahmed Sameer.
Minister at the Presidential Office, Ahmed Sameer has stated that the Parliament is not a playground, and the Speaker and the members should act in accordance with the rules of parliament.

He made the statement speaking on a local TV program tonight, in regard to the ongoing discussions about the Chaagos dispute at the Parliament.

Referring to the issue of jurisdiction of Mauritius, Sameer said Article 149 of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament clearly states that an emergency motion cannot be heard in connection with a case pending in a court. Therefore, as the rules do not specify cases pending in a court in the Maldives or outside the Maldives, the Chagos issue should not be debated in Parliament while the issue is being addressed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Speaking further, Sameer said that although there are challenges in parliament on both budget and tax matters, President Solih should be given the opportunity to rule independently during this term.

Sameer added that he was confident that the tax and budget issues at the parliament would be resolved as the government wanted, despite the challenges.
