Former President and current Parliamentary Speaker Mohamed Nasheed will attend this year’s COP27 Summit as a member of the Sri Lankan delegation.

United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) brings parties together to accelerate global climate action through emissions reduction, scaled-up adaptation efforts, and enhanced flows of appropriate finance. This year the summit will be held at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

According to a statement issued by the Parliament office, President Nasheed will attend the COP27 summit from 4 to 6 this month as a member of the delegation of neighboring Sri Lanka. However, the parliament administration did not disclose the reason for President Nasheed's attendance as a member of the Sri Lankan delegation.

Meanwhile, some of Nasheed’s closest allies say that President Nasheed was not invited or given an opportunity to join the Maldivian delegation for the COP27. The government has yet to comment on such allegations.

Nasheed departed on Friday afternoon for Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to attend the COP27.
