Member of Parliament for the Maradhoo constituency, Ibrahim Shareef has posed a question regarding the Chagos archipelago south of Addu City.

Tagging various politicians who have publicly criticized the government regarding the Chagos issue, Shareef asked in a tweet whether the 12,000 or so Christian citizens of Chagos would become Maldivian citizens if Chagos is made a Maldivian atoll.

Various people opposing the government have said that Chagos belongs to the Maldives and that the first action to take is to have talks to get it. The two most notable of these are ex-president and current Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, and former Attorney General, Dr. Mohamed Munavvar.

They say that through checking history and also comparing the distance between Chagos and Mauritius, and Chagos and Maldives, they believe that Chagos has to be under Maldivian jurisdiction. And they say the Maldivian government should work in this direction too.

The government states that the idea of colonizing Chagos is something the government does not support and that the government believes Chagos belongs to Mauritius. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated this in a letter to the prime minister of Mauritius.
