Cyryx College Chairman, and MNP Vice President, Ahmed Shareef has accused the previous government on destroying the higher education system in the Maldives.

Shareef said the country’s higher education system was destroyed by the education Minister Aishath Shiham during President Yameen’s government. He accused that some of the policies introduced at the time disrupted the entire system.

These included the B-Tech program and keeping students in the school system until the age of 18, said Shareef. In addition, the change in A' Level and O' Level examination dates was also a challenge to the higher education system, he said.

Recently, the current government has passed the Higher Education and Training Act. Under the Act, higher education service providers in the country becomes accountable bodies with full independence and power to decide their affairs independently.

As long-time veteran of the higher education sector and who continues to do so, he had earlier expressed his concern that the Higher Education and Training Act restricted the options available to private institutions. Shareef expressed concern over the opportunities given to colleges to establish their own universities.
