Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has stated that the detention center being developed in Hulhumale' for foreigners will be completed this year.
Speaking on a Raajje TV program, Fayyaz said that a detention center for foreigners is being built in Hulhumale'.
The Minister said that there has been no government facility to detain foreigners staying in the country illegally, before their deportation. And that having no detainment facility for foreigners who are staying illegally without participating in the regulation program was a great obstacle to deporting them.
"We can do this by keeping illegal immigrants in a detention center and processing them under the immigration laws. If they are to be deported, they will be deported. But there is no facility for that. In detention, Immigration can only keep about 40 people at a time. Now work is being done to develop a bigger detention center in Hulhumale'. When it's finished, with this opportunity we are giving, work to deport illegal immigrants can start. Before we could only send them away voluntarily," Fayyaz stated.
