Security forces have foiled a counter-terrorism operation in the country, police said.

This was announced at a press conference by the Maldives Police Service today.

Head Inspector of the Terrorism and Violent Extremism Investigation Unit, Uswath Ahmed said the attack was planned by pro-IS groups. As such, it has been discovered that there are plans to kill many people by blowing up dangerous objects in various parts of the country.

14 people have been arrested in connection to the case. One of them was arrested in Guraidhoo island, and one other man was arrested from the Capital.

Uswath said nine of the 14 arrested had terrorism records. Their remand has been extended, he said.
