Economic Minister Fayyaz has stated that when former president Abdulla Yameen says that in Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government there is no freedom and it is oppressive, he finds it embarrassing.

Speaking on a program on state media PSM, the Minister said that the last four years has not been long enough for the people to forget Yameen's government. He said there is freedom of the press and freedom to gather in public for the Maldivian citizens and that there is no doubt about the freedom.

Fayyaz stated that Yameen's government acted as it pleased without a care for the law and that the relevant institutions were too scared then to say anything. But now that situation has changed.

Fayyaz said that in the last four years, President Solih's government has taken the nation to a state that is as different from as it was in Yameen's term as the sky is to the Earth. He said even in the current government, there are certain wrongs being done in different institutions and that there are things to correct. And that the intention to correct those things and the work in that direction can be seen clearly.

"You have to say whether things are being done or not, at which level things are, after seeing the history of our critics. When president Yameen comes out and says there is no freedom, there is oppression, it is even embarrassing to listen to that, that there is no press freedom, only oppression. See, it hasn't been long enough for us to forget what it was like before the last four years," said MDP chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail.

Furthermore, Fayyaz stated the opposition believes this government is running things well and that is the reason too many people do not go to the streets to protest. He added that when people come out to the streets to protest now, they will not be hurt unlike in Yameen's time.
