The Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has stated today that yesterday's Parliament sitting was not ended illegally.

Yesterday while the Parliament was ready to ask for a vote on the amendment on raising taxes, Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef, who was the acting speaker then, had said there was a lack of quorum necessary for the vote, and ended the sitting. Many members accused him of acting against the rules of the Parliament.

Starting today's sitting, the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said there is only one way to end a sitting and that is the speaker declaring the sitting has ended after saying the prayers.

"Stating this because members are confused, saying it was ended illegally," said Nasheed.

After he said this, MDP member Ibrahim "Mavota" Shareef raised a point of order and said that Afeef made three mistakes, one being declaring a lack of quorum when there was quorum.

Without answering Shareef's point of order, Nasheed said that he had seen Shareef sit in the Speaker's chair and that it is against all the rules and regulations of the Parliament and "a great sadness".

The Committee of the Parliament has agreed to pass the amendment proposed by the government to raise GST and TGST as it is. Nasheed's faction, however, has declined even the amendments proposed in the Committee stage.
