The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid sends a message of good wishes and congratulations to Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, on the eve of the opening of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“It gives me great pleasure to send good wishes and warm congratulations to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of Qatar, on the eve of the opening of the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” said Minister in his message.

“It is a matter of immense pride that Qatar is the first Muslim country, and only the second Asian country to host the World Cup. As a small State, the Maldives is also extremely proud of the fact that Qatar is the smallest country to host the World Cup - a fact that demonstrates the capability and ability of small States to make meaningful contributions in every field.”

He then congratulated the Qatari people for the excellent preparations for the World Cup, especially during a time of recovery from a global pandemic. He also highlighted the Qatari government’s efforts to enhance sustainability during the World Cup.

“We applaud the Government’s efforts to enhance sustainability during the World Cup, including in energy use, waste management, and infrastructure,” said Minister Shahid.

Before concluding his message, Shahid wish the people of Qatar every success and noted that the people of the Maldives are looking forward to an entertaining and successful 2022 World Cup.
