Maldives has decided to apply for two organs of the United Nations, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council.

The Foreign Ministry stated tonight that the applications are for the 2033-2034 term in the Security Council and the 2027-2028 term in the Economic and Social Council.

If Maldives gets elected for both, it would mark the first time Maldives became a member of these organs of the UN.

"Strengthening the relationships between Maldives and other nations and international organizations, and increasing the activity of Maldives in the international sphere is a promise of the government," the Foreign Ministry said in its statement.

Furthermore, the Ministry stated that advocating for what is best for Maldives in the international sphere and making a good name for the country are promises of the government too. The government had decided to participate in these elections to secure a bright future for the country, based on the promises that were made.

As such, the achievements of the country in the United Nations since 2018 include presidency in the General Assembly and membership in the Human Rights Council.

The Foreign Ministry stated that the things achieved by Maldives so far prove that small island nations can play important roles in the international sphere.

The main purpose of the UN Security Council is maintaining global peace and security. And the main purpose of the Economic and Social Council is aiding nations in attaining sustainable development goals.
