Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated that what was put a stop to in the recent counter-terrorism operation in Male', Addu, and some other islands was one of the most dangerous terrorist plots planned in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Addu City last night marking the 29th anniversary of the MNDF Southern Area Command, the Minister had noted the recent counter-terrorism operation which had the MNDF and Police working together in Addu City and Male' City.

Mariya stated that the dismantled plot was the most dangerous plot that had been stopped so far. And that there are people working ceaselessly to spread such danger and plot attacks on people and property.

Mariya said that such an attack would have dire consequences lasting for years in a small nation like Maldives which has a fragile economy that relies on tourism. And that the people who plan such things spread their propaganda on the cyber or information domain and that the revolutionary changes that have come to technology and social media have provided such people with more opportunities for their activities. And therefore, in a changing environment, the Minister called for soldiers to change too.

While 14 people have been arrested in the counter-terrorism operation, the Police report that these people were plotting a powerful explosion. And that this planned terrorist attack would have ended multiple lives and that in one of the suspect's homes, explosive chemicals have been found.
