Planning Ministry has stated that the construction of the dry land pillar of the biggest infrastructure project of the government, Thila-Male' Bridge, has been completed.

The Joint Project Monitoring Committee's fifth meeting was held last Tuesday. These meetings are held to review the work done in the Thila-Male' Bridge project. In the meeting, in which officials from the governments of India and Maldives participated, information regarding the progress of the project and the timelines of future work were shared and discussed.

Speaking to state media regarding this project, the Project Manager appointed by the Planning Ministry Mohamed Jinan stated that the construction of the concrete pillar in the dry land of Male' has been completed last week.

Jinan stated that this was the first permanent pillar erected after the test piling work.

In addition to this, work on the test pillars in the sea has been prepared for, which is done before the construction of permanent pillars in the sea. The steel structure needed for this has been completed.

The Bridge construction is being carried out by India's Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. The Planning Ministry has stated that the work will be done following the timeline per the agreement.

By December of 2023, all the work to connect Male' and Gulhifalhu will be completed per the timeline. The agreement states that the bridge connecting Male' and Vilimale' shall be completed in July, 2023.

The length of the Thila-Male' Bridge is 6.7 kilometres. This project includes the bridge and linking roads.

For the whole project, USD 500 million would be spent, which is more than MVR 7 billion. The project is carried out under the USD 100 million grant and USD 400 million line of credit given by the Indian government.
