In the year 2023, a new leader, who has never ruled the country will be elected to the government of the Maldives, said the Maldives National Party, MNPs Vice President Ahmed Shareef.

Shareef’s remarks came followed by the statements made by President Nasheed, accusing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of ruling against the people's decisions.

Shareef said no leader has ruled in accordance with the Constitution since 2008, and that not a single ruler has ever decided to rule the country without violating the Constitution. Hence the people do not want to bring someone who has ruled before to power, said Shareef.

"No leader has ruled in accordance with the Constitution since 2008. Not a single leader has not violated the Constitution. We don't want to see the past being repeated. From 2023 onwards, a completely new leader will rule,” Shareef stated.

While the MNP vice-leader said the people want a new leader, the MNP has also decided to contest the upcoming presidential election.
