Home Minister Imran Abdulla has stated that the most important thing that can be done to stop scams is raising awareness of it among the people.

While speaking at the workshop held to commence the work against scamming which has various institutions working together, the Minister said that it was important for all the relevant institutions to work together to protect the citizens and businesses from the damage caused by scam calls.

Speaking at the Multi-Agency Workshop on Combatting Scam in the Maldives, Imran said that the economic damages caused by scam calls to the people, which affect the whole social fabric of the Maldives, are too large to be simply just quantified.

Imran added that because of scams, a lot of families in the country had to face great pain, and accounting in businesses and doing work have become difficult.

The Minister said that while about 4 scam calls are reported on a daily basis, it has to be accepted that there are a lot of obstacles in the way of solving this issue.

While scamming people out of their money has become common in Maldives, it is notable that this is the first time relevant institutions have joined together to work against this.
