Feydhoo MP Mohamed Nihad has stated that the one who can win for MDP in the coming presidential elections is the party's leader President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Due to differences of opinion between party leader Solih and party president Mohamed Nasheed, MDP has divided into two factions and verbal attacks have been exchanged on social media between members of the two factions. Both leaders have announced that they will participate in the party primary.
Nihad, who supports the Solih faction, said that President Solih will be the one to win the presidential election for MDP. And that in the primary, the party members will vote for the candidate who can secure an MDP presidency.
"MDP members do not wish to return to oppression. MDP members do not wish to see all leaders in prison. It's guaranteed that the one who will win for MDP in 2023 is President Solih," said Nihad referring to former President and current opposition leader Abdulla Yameen jailing political leaders who opposed him.
Announcing that he will be running for a second term, President Solih had said that the biggest priority is MDP getting the presidency and that it is what is beneficial for the whole country. The President added that however no single party can win the election and it can only be done with a multiparty alliance.
"I am sure that I can win in 2023 with a coalition led by MDP. It cannot be done by MDP alone," said President Solih who has the record of successfully maintaining a coalition government for the longest time.
The candidate who will get the MDP presidential ticket will be determined after the party primary. After a date for the MDP primary was established, it was later postponed.
