The fine imposed on India's Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. for the damage caused to the Villimale' reef by their bridge platform has been appealed.

Afcons was fined MVR 69.4 million for damage caused by a bridge platform colliding with the Vilimale' reef while work was being done on the Thila-Male' bridge project.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had stated that they had asked the company on the 13th of last month to pay the money within 30 days including public holidays.

While Afcons has appealed the fine last Thursday, they had earlier applied to the Environment Ministry for a review of the case.

EPA has stated that Afcons was fined after the EPA conducted a survey of the damage caused to the reef. According to the statement released by EPA, an area of 2,755 square meters of the reef had been damaged.

The bridge platform got grounded on the reef on August 16 and the platform was removed on August 27.
