Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam has stated that businessmen should stop deceiving the people.

Rozaina said this referring to a recent case of 10% duty being taken from aluminum doorframes after the government had stopped taking duty from them. The government decided not to impose a duty on housing construction materials in 2020.

Rozaina said that businessmen should stop trying to deceive the people. She said that GST will also be increased from next year, yet some businessmen are raising the prices of goods already and blaming it on raised GST.

Rozaina Adam, who is the chairperson of the Committee on Independent Institutions in the Parliament, said she believed that the prices of goods will rise along with the price of oil. However, she stated that many places are raising prices twice as much as the oil prices rose, which should not be done.

“This is too much, even goods that had their prices raised cos of a rise in oil prices, when the price of oil went down, theirs didn't,” said Rozaina, president of MDP women’s branch.

From January next year, the tax on goods and services will be increased from 6% to 8%. This decision of the government has led to a rise in the prices of some commodities in the market.
