The Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances, has accused former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom for aiding in the case of kidnapping and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdullah.

Ahmed Rilwan, 28, a journalist who worked for Minivan News, went missing on August 7, 2014. The Presidential Commission implemented by President Solih to investigate the kidnapping and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan presented their findings to the President at a meeting held at the President's Office this afternoon.

Sharing information on the report, Death Commission member Misbah Abbas said, a man involved in Rilwan's kidnapping and murder had met former President Abdullah Yameen. According to the Commission, the suspect, Mohamed Munaz, Th. Omadhoo, met President Yameen before leaving for Syria and told him all about the people involved and how it was done — forcing Ahmed Rilwan into a car, and killing him.

Death Commission member Misbah Abbas also accused of the former President Yameen on aiding suspect Munaz to travel out of the Maldives.

The prosecution has charged three people with terrorism in connection with the disappearance of Rilwan. They are H. Hilton, Ahmed Alif Rauf, S. Hulhudhoo, Athireeaage, Mohammed Suaid and Gdh. Vadhoo, Karanka, Mohammed Nooruddin.

The investigation of the case is the top priority of this term of office, President Solih has said earlier.

Eight years after his disappearance, the Death Commission report reveals Rilwan was attacked by members of a religious extremist group. The commission said it's investigation revealed that Rilwan was forcibly taken in a car at 1:45 am on August 7, 2014 and put on a dinghy boat. He was then transferred to a Fishing vessel before beheading and throwing overboard.

The commission said the attack was carried out by a group of people, many of whom went to Syria and died.
