Vice president of Maldives National Party (MNP), Ahmed Shareef has criticized the government's decision to give opportunities to foreign universities without giving it to locally run higher education institutions.

Shareef's criticism comes after rules were changed to allow colleges or universities that have government shares from countries with which Maldives has established political relations to operate in Maldives.

Shareef said it was concerning that foreign-run universities were allowed to operate in Maldives without giving university permission to institutions that have been providing higher education in Maldives for many years. He also said that it undermines the purpose for which the Ministry of Higher Education and the MQA were created.

"Foreign agents can run universities here saying their governments have a share, while places that have been providing higher education in Maldives for 30 years do not get the permission. The purpose of creating the ministry and establishing the MQA has been lost," said Shareef.

With the change to the law on the registration of foreign higher education institutions in Maldives, under an agreement with Maldives, foreign higher education and training institutions with state shares will be able to operate campuses in Maldives.
