Maldives National Party (MNP) has called for stronger rules to ensure the safety of detainees.

MNP called for this in the statement they released expressing their concerns over the suicide attempt made by Abubakr Faisal who was detained at the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Police Station for the alleged murder of his wife Nishama Mohamed, Hithahfinivaage, HDh. Nolhivaram.

MNP said in their statement that it was concerning that Faisal had attempted to commit suicide while in police custody. And that such an act can only be carried out because the institutions have become lax and now lack the ability to take responsibility.

"And this is undoubtedly evidence of the failure of the investigating departments to bring such sensitive cases to justice," MNP, led by former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim, said in the statement.

In the statement, MNP called for stronger rules to ensure justice for victims of domestic violence and the safety of those in detention. The party also called on the government to improve the institutions so that such cases do not happen again.

Abubakr Faisal, who is accused of murdering his wife, attempted to commit suicide by hanging while being held in custody for 15 days. He is currently being treated in the ICU. According to the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, he is in critical condition. The Police have stated that the case has been referred to the HRCM and NIC and is being investigated.
