Madaveli MP Hussain Firushan has said that no one can force anyone to vote a specific candidate in the MDP primary, and that he will support former president Mohamed Nasheed.
The MDP primary for the 2023 presidential election will be held on Saturday, January 28. The candidates who have announced their candidacies so far are party leader President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and party president Mohamed Nasheed.
Regarding the primary, Firushan said that he is with Nasheed to win the MDP primary with courage, getting encouragement from each other.
"Can't be forced. Can't be intimidated. I'm firmly with Nasheed," said Firushan.
Two factions have formed within MDP, a pro-Solih faction and a pro-Nasheed faction. Disagreements between the two have become severe.
MDP said in an announcement that party members who wish to contest the primary must complete and submit an application form before 4:00 pm on Saturday, December 24, 2022 with the support of 500 members of the party.
