Road Development Corporation's Managing Director Moosa (Mookey) Ali Manik has indirectly responded to the MDP President, Mohamed Nasheed, saying that chicanery is not the way to win.

Mookey's comment came at a time Nasheed has said that the party’s presidential primary would be unfair as many members of the party have been expelled and therefore the party’s membership register is in disarray. MDP National Council member Mookey said that cleaning up the MDP register was a promise of both the candidates who contested the party's chairmanship election.

Mookey also said that many MDP members have raised concerns over opposition PPM activists getting involved in the MDP register and influencing the internal elections.

"It was done in accordance with the National Council's resolution, chicanery is not the way to win," said Mookey, who is in the faction of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, having a part in the resolution passed by the MDP National Council.

While former President Mohamed Nasheed has questioned the membership register, MDP has issued a statement saying that the party's membership register is in accordance with the party's constitution and the decisions of the National Council.

MDP said that the register was allowing members belonging to other political parties and those holding positions in other parties to contest in the internal elections and disrupt votes. As this will be an obstacle to the promotion of the party's policies, the party stated that the decision to authenticate the party register was made by the MDP National Council, in accordance with the MDP constitution and the decisions of the Council.

MDP also stated that while the choice to vote in the primary should only be given to authentic members of the party, the register is now validated and open to all citizens who wish to join the party in accordance with the decision of the National Council.

Both President Solih and party president Nasheed have decided to contest the MDP presidential primary.
