Minister of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure, Ahmed Aslam has stated that Japan has played a major role in transforming the Maldives from a poor country to a developing country.

Minister Aslam said this while speaking at the re-installation ceremony of the monument of the project of building a seawall around Male', which was done with Japanese aid.

Speaking at the ceremony, Aslam said the Japanese government is a very important partner in bringing development and progress to Maldives as a poor country.

The Minister said that the seawall around Male' is a symbol of the relationship between Maldives and Japan. And that the seawall project is not only just an infrastructure development but it is a work connected to the lives of the citizens of Male'.

In his speech, Aslam noted that in addition to the harbor and seawall work, the Japanese government has also provided substantial assistance for the construction of schools in rural areas of Maldives.

"Even schools were built in all the populated islands of Maldives with the help of the Japanese government," said Aslam.



Maldives and Japan established political relations in 1967.

While it has been 55 years since Maldives and Japan established political relations, many activities are being done to celebrate the anniversary.
