Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has stated that while Japan and Maldives have a long political relationship, Japan is a nation that has always been with Maldives without faltering.

Minister Shahid said this while speaking at a special dinner hosted by the Japanese ambassador to Maldives on the occasion of the official visit of the State Minister of the Japanese Foreign Ministry Takei Shunsuke on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of political relations between Maldives and Japan.

Shahid said in his speech that while the two countries have a long political relationship of 55 years, Japan has always remained with the Maldives without a change in the relationship. The Minister also thanked Japan, noting that Japan is one of the countries to give aid closely in every difficult situation faced by the Maldives. As such, he said that the assistance provided during the tsunami and the subsequent building of the seawall around Male' was the most notable assistance given by Japan.



The Minister said the country's assistance in the fields of education, health, defense, and social development is visible even now. The Minister also noted that the relations between the two countries have made great progress in the past 55 years.

Shahid also thanked Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa for his efforts to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Maldives and Japan established political ties in 1967.
