Following its decision to do so in the midst of a nationwide outbreak, France on Sunday encouraged other members of the European Union to test Chinese passengers for COVID-19.

The 27-nation, virtually borderless EU only requires tests in Italy and Spain, and health officials from all throughout the union were unable to reach consensus last week on a common strategy. There will be more discussions this week.

From Sunday, France is requiring that travelers from China provide a negative COVID-19 test result less than 48 hours before departure and will randomly test those arriving.

“France will push for this methodology to be applied across the EU,” Health Minister François Braun said as he and Transport Minister Clement Beaune checked on the new procedures at Paris’ Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport.
