Former MDP Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik has stated that 20,000 people had been expelled from MDP on request of the party president Mohamed Nasheed.

Both President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed have announced their candidacies and have started campaigning for the MDP presidential primary, which is set to be held this month. Since then, Nasheed has accused of 39,000 members being expelled from the party, and asked the MDP Disciplinary Committee to investigate the matter.

Regarding this, former MDP Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik has stated that Nasheed had deliberately expelled many people who had worked in the party's front line over the past 15 years by creating false issues in the Disciplinary Committee.

However, many of those who had joined the party leadership have either been expelled or they have resigned from the party after having disagreements with Nasheed.

“Including those people's family members, a total of 20,000 people were expelled from the party for Nasheed's sake,” said Moosa, who recently rejoined the party after being away from the party for a long time after his expulsion from the party by the party's Ethics Committee for allegedly voting against the whipline.

Regarding the issue of the allegedly expelled 39,000 members, MDP Complaints Committee member Ahmed Abdulla Afeef has stated that members who were not on the Elections Commission's register were removed from the party register after giving them the opportunity to rejoin the party in a period of three months. He added that about 5000 members have rejoined in that period.

Speaking on the issue, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail stated that more than 23,000 members who were on the MDP register before belonged to other parties. And that 11,000 members were not registered to any party on the Election Commission register.
