PNC Vice President Adam Shareef Umar said last night that opposition leader and PPM Presidential candidate Yameen Abdul Gayoom's imprisonment was a childish move by the government.

Speaking on Sangu TV last night, PNC Vice President and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef said the government's imprisonment of Yameen was not a great decision but a childish one.

Adam Shareef said that the political leaders who are contesting former President Yameen are insecure with him and that is why he is in jail. And that even earlier Yameen's popularity and support for him had increased significantly with his imprisonment before.

Therefore, Adam Shareef said that the support for Yameen will become even greater. And that if Yameen is freed, the whole country will rise up and if he contests the election, he will win the election in a single round.

"Now I believe if Yameen is released I would say he will win in one round with an amount between 55 and 65 percent. So the hope we can give to the people is don't worry, God-willing, Yameen will take the helm of the country in November this year to work with the citizens," said Adam Shareef, who was also the Defense Minister in former President Yameen's government.

In the V. Aarah case, Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined $5 million for money laundering and bribery. While the opposition are having regular protests calling for Yameen to be freed, a hearing on the alleged laundering of $1.1 million in bribes in the lease of Fuggiri is scheduled to be held today. Due to Yameen's jail sentence, he has lost his chance to contest this year's presidential election. Yameen can only contest the presidential election if his conviction is vacated by the High Court or the Supreme Court.
