Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau has stated that some Atoll Councils are trying to prevent the development of islands.

Shifau said this responding to Noon Atoll Council filing a case in the Civil Court against the government for the government's work on leasing N. Kandoodhoo for a long period.

Shifau said some atolls are pleading with the government to find a way to develop their islands. However, the MP said some Atoll Councils are trying to prevent the development of their own islands, and the ones who suffer from this are the citizens.

"There is no way for the 'sweetness' of the decentralization system to reach the people," said Shifau.

The Noonu Atoll Council has said it is against selling any natural resources in the atoll in single parcels without a solution to basic housing.

The government had decided to lease a lagoon in Noonu Atoll for USD 22 million and dredge Giraavaru lagoon to provide housing for citizens of Male'.
