The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali has reassured that there had not been any spending from Zakat fund against policies.

The minister made the reassurance while responding to a written reply request to a question raised from Maafannu Central constituency MP Ibrahim Rasheed, where he accused of misusing Zakat fund.

In response Minister also stated that Islam has prescribed eight categories for expenditure of zakat money, and no expenses has been made outside those categories.

Zakat can be paid to deserving individuals or groups who fall into one or more of eight zakatable categories designated in Islam. These include the poor, meaning low-income or indigent, the needy, meaning someone who is in difficulty, Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, meaning new Muslims and friends of the Muslim community, those in bondage (slaves and captives), the debt-ridden, in the cause of God and the wayfarer, meaning those who are stranded or traveling with few resources.

Therefore, the government also uses the zakat fund to help the poor, to help the needy in the society, to provide education and medical treatment, the Minister further explained.

The fund is spent on the advice and consultation of the Zakat Committee, said the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali assuring that the Zakat fund is not being misused.
