Minister of the Environment, Climate Change, and Technology for the Maldives, Aminath Shauna has stated that it is challenging to adapt our lifestyle to climate change, while speaking at USAID Ocean Plastics Reduction event held yesterday.

The USAID Ocean Plastics Reduction Activity is a five-year project to reduce environmental plastics by decreasing plastic inputs and improving integrated solid waste management (SWM) practices in Maldives and Sri Lanka. With a focus on ocean plastics pollution, we will fund activities that promote the 3R principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling, as well as improve government capacity to manage the use and disposal of plastics.

Under the project a large amount of plastic waste was collected from the Artificial Beach area yesterday.

Speaking at the activity launch ceremony, Minister Shauna said that the rising sea-level contributed by the climate change causes erosion, pollution of fresh water bodies and increases risk of floodng in islands. She also described adapting to climate change as challenging.

"A lot of garbage has been collected from the beach area in an hour. This shows the sensitivity of the problem," she said.

USAID's Ocean Plastics Reduction Activity will work to reduce environmental plastics by decreasing plastic inputs & improving integrated solid waste management (SWM) practices in the Maldives.

The objectives of this project includes; reducing the need for new plastic products, improve and expand waste management, support local communities to take the lead in developing waste management solutions, and improve the conditions that enable better waste management, with a focus on reducing plastic waste in the ocean.
