The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has increased the fees for government companies and private collectors.

WAMCO said yesterday that it has decided to change the prices of some services provided by the company from the 20th of this month though the prices for households, businesses and commercial establishments, and call and pickup services (CAPS) will remain unchanged.

Households will still be charged MVR 150 per month. Businesses and commercial establishments will be charged MVR 27 per litre. In addition, call and pickup services will be charged MVR 330 per tonne.

Previously, WAMCO disposed of the waste of government companies at a rate of MVR 212 per tonne. And private collectors were charged MVR 750. However, it has now been changed to charge MVR 2660 per tonne from all. At the same time, WAMCO has increased the charge for waste disposal at transfer stations from MVR 212 to MVR 1060.

WAMCO has stated that the price change was necessary to ensure a sustainable service in the Male' area. According to the Environment Ministry, while there are 53,690 households in the Male' area that are registered for WAMCO services, only about 20,000 households are paying the fees.
