The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that the storage, cleaning and recycling of metals such as aluminium, iron and copper in residential areas of Male' City should be done with permission.

EPA said in a statement released today that it has been receiving a number of complaints regarding the storage, cleaning and recycling of metals like aluminium, iron and copper in residential areas, which are causing various inconveniences and health hazards to residents.

EPA said that under the Waste Management Act, waste storage, treatment or recycling must be done with the required permits. The agency reminded that such activities without permission are punishable offences. In addition, the agency stated that unsafe storage, cleaning and recycling of metals can cause serious harm to the health of residents and pedestrians in the area.

EPA said that even though such work is done to reduce the amount of waste, they should be done after taking the necessary safety measures and obtaining all the necessary permits.

Therefore, people engaged in the storage, refining and recycling of metals such as aluminium, iron and copper must apply to the EPA for permits within 30 days and must take the necessary safety precautions in carrying out such activities.
