The Elections Commission has stated that, per the law, digital ID cards cannot be used to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

While preparations are being made in Maldives for the implementation of digital ID cards, some people are asking questions regarding the use of digital ID cards in the upcoming presidential election.

Elections Commission Vice President Ismail Habeeb told the media that digital ID cards cannot be used in any election as per the law. He also added that digital ID cards can only be used by mobile phones and it is legally prohibited to bring mobile phones into the polling station.

Habeeb said that with digital ID cards, re-registration will be made easier for people. He said that therefore, how digital ID cards can be used in that situation are currently being discussed.

This year's presidential election is scheduled for the 9th of September. The Elections Commission is currently doing all the necessary work to prepare for the election.
