The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has started investigating cases of copies of road vehicle registries being made with invalid documents.

The registration numbers of 50 such vehicles identified by the Ministry have been published in the gazette, which includes cars and motorcycles. The Ministry has now given the owners of these vehicles seven days to submit the original registrations.

The Transport Ministry said the owners will be given the opportunity to amend the registrations or re-register the vehicles. However, the registrations of the vehicles that are not amended within that period will be cancelled.

The Ministry of Transport has now been making public the registration numbers of all road vehicles registered since December last year. This has been a step taken to work in a transparent manner to avoid corruption and to prevent anyone from committing illegal activities.

About 200 vehicle registrations have recently been canceled for being made illegally. However, the owners of 87 of the vehicles filed a case in the Civil Court, which issued an interim order to stop the implementation of the decision to cancel the registrations.

The state appealed the case to the High Court last October. However, the court has not yet come to a decision on the matter.
