The National Drug Agency (NDA) has issued a statement saying that intoxicated people who are begging on the streets of Male' City are getting treatment.

NDA stated that there are a large number of men and women who are begging in a state of intoxication on the streets of Male', and that they have been taken to treatment centers and entered into programs to rehabilitate them.

The agency said that they are giving world-class drugs for the treatment of addicts under their care. However, they said that these people need more care and compassion to recover and reintroduce to society.

NDA said that while intoxicated people begging in the streets of Male' are being treated, something else of concern was noticed about them. The agency said that such people have been diagnosed with serious diseases and that they are being treated for that too.

The problem of intoxicated people sleeping on the streets and begging in front of shops and ATMs has been a major concern of the public.

Police statistics show that the past four years have seen the highest number of drug seizures in police history. At the same time, 2022 was the year with the highest amount of drugs seized in the history of Customs, according to the Maldives Customs Service.
