The Corrections Service has announced that the Male' Prison adjacent to the new Dharumavantha School that is being built will be vacated in time for the upcoming academic year.
The new building of Dharumavantha School is being constructed in front of Villa College, next to Male' Prison. While the school building is nearing completion, the presence of a prison adjacent to the school has been a concern for many.
The Corrections Service said the prison will be vacated by the start of the new academic year, with the prisoners transferred elsewhere. As such, the prisoners are currently being transferred to Hulhumale' and Maafushi prisons as space permits.
The new academic year is scheduled to start on August 6. The new building of Dharumavantha School is being prepared for the opening of schools by then.
Since 2016, when the original Dharumavantha School building became too old and unusable, the school has been teaching in a temporary building, adjacent to Velana Building.
