Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader Qasim Ibrahim's Special Envoy Ilham Ahmed has stated that those who are resigning from the party after the party leader decided to contest the upcoming presidential election, were members in name only.

Ilham was referring to reports in the media that some senior members of the party are leaving the party after Qasim Ibrahim announced his intention to contest the presidential election.

Ilham said even though "Jumhooree Party was said with their names", these people who resigned have not been involved in any political activities of the party in the past four years. Ilham, who is also a former MP of the Gemanafushi constituency, said that those who resigned from the party were hoping for certain things. And that they tried hard to take the party in that direction.

Certain people who were in the JP slots of the government have resigned from the party following the party's decision to contest the upcoming presidential election separate from the current ruling coalition. In their resignation letters, they said they decided to leave JP because they have decided to support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the election.

Some people who are critical of the resignees have alleged that they are resigning to prevent the removal of them from their government positions, dreaming that they will retain those positions in the next term.
