Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that heavy rains caused flooding in the city because storm water pumps were not used.
Heavy rains have caused two to three feet of water in some roads of the city. This is the first time in a long time in which Male' has been flooded like this.
Responding to questions from the public on social media, Mayor Muizzu said the flooding was caused by the storm water system maintainer not turning on the pumps for a long time. The Mayor said it was a pity.
"It's a pity that the storm water system maintainer didn't switch on the pumps for a long time," said Dr. Muizzu.
In addition, Dr. Muizzu said the City Council’s project to build roads in the city has been withdrawn.
Flooding have also caused garbage on the streets to spread around in the water. Usage of vehicles have also become challenging.
The Met Office had issued a white alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm today in K. and V. Atolls.
