An Indian man has been fined MVR 120,000 for smuggling gold into Maldives.

The Indian national, Harif Meladeth Aboobaker, has pleaded guilty to the charge of smuggling goods under the Customs Act, for smuggling two packets of gold.

The punishment for the offense is confiscation of the smuggled goods, and imprisonment for a duration between one month and two years or a fine between MVR 10,000 and MVR 240,000.

The charges against him state that examination of Harif's body revealed that 2,755 grams of gold was smuggled by taping them to his shins.

In response to the charges, Harif said he admitted to doing the crime but he said he did not know that it was a crime.

Judge Faiz Rashad ruled that Harif was guilty of attempting to smuggle goods into Maldives under the Customs Act. He was fined MVR 120,000 and ordered to pay the money to MIRA within four days, excluding public holidays.

The gold was confiscated under Section 97(D) of the Customs Act.
