The High Court today accepted the appeal of the 11 year jail sentence by the Criminal Court against former President Abdulla Yameen regarding the V. Aarah lease case.

The Criminal Court sentenced Yameen to 11 years in prison on December 25 last year for accepting bribes and money laundering. The judgment was appealed to the High Court which accepted the case and registered it today.

Yameen was convicted of accepting bribes and sentenced to four years in prison. The Criminal Court also sentenced Yameen to seven years in prison and a fine of USD 5 million for money laundering. The main opposition party PPM's presidential candidate Yameen's lawyers said the verdict has been appealed in the High Court and that they will seek his release on bail.

Previously, even in the GA. Vodamulaa lease case, he was sentenced to five years in prison and fined USD 5 million. However, the Supreme Court later quashed the verdict.
