Opposition leader and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's legal team's leading lawyer, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has asked to withdraw all charges against Yameen in the MMPRC case.
Jameel said this referring to the decision of the Prosecutor General's Office to withdraw the corruption charges against Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof, who was accused of profiting from the same MMPRC scandal. Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel said that the government's prosecution is a political machine. And that today it was proved that the current Prosecutor General does nothing but file the political charges that this government wants against Yameen.
"I call for the withdrawal of all charges against Yameen immediately," said Jameel.
While the list of alleged beneficiaries of the MMPRC scandal during the rule of former President Yameen includes several names, Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof is one of the few people who have been charged.
The opposition party PPM said the charges against Yameen are politically motivated and the purpose is to deprive him of the opportunity to contest the presidential election.
